Procedure

Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic procedure that reshapes the nose. It can have a functional component if you have trouble breathing through your nose, a cosmetic component to change the look of your nose, or both.

Rhinoplasty typically takes 2-4 hours depending on how much work needs to be done. Combining a component to improve breathing through your nose or cases of revisional rhinoplasty can extend the time it takes for this surgery.

Open vs. Closed

Rhinoplasty can be performed in two varieties: open vs closed. Open rhinoplasty involves a small incision in the columella, the part of your nose that separates the two nostrils. Closed rhinoplasty involves incisions that are all on the inside of your nose. Plastic surgeon Dr. Jeffrey Lee typically recommends open rhinoplasty in most people but will discuss his recommendations based on your goals.

Considerations

Everyone’s rhinoplasty can be different because everyone has different noses. This surgery involves exposing the anatomy of the nose by making incisions and then changing the underlying structure which can include cartilage and/or bone to make it more aesthetic and harmonious with the rest of your face.

A patient must realize that rhinoplasty can only change their starting anatomy. It cannot give you someone else’s nose. Dr. Lee often is asked for a nose on certain well-known celebrities but the reality is that everyone starts out with a different nose and there are limitations on how much you can safely change the shape of a patient’s nose.

Recovery

Recovery from rhinoplasty is typically 1-2 weeks. Most patients have sutures and a nasal splint that is removed at 5-7 days. Bruising can last 1-2 weeks but is significantly better after 1 week. Swelling of the tip of the nose persists up to 6 months but is usually significantly better after 3-4 weeks.
