Procedure
Liposuction is a surgical fat removal procedure that reduces the volume of fat in a targeted area of the body. It is particularly useful in stubborn areas that always seem to remain no matter how much a patient works on diet and exercise. It is also commonly combined with other procedures to either enhance the overall result, such as lipo of the flanks in the setting of an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck). Liposuction is commonly performed on the:
- Neck
- Chin
- Chest (gynecomastia)
- Upper arms
- Stomach
- Flanks
- Back
- Thighs
Liposuction can vary depending on the area but typically takes 30 -45 minutes per body area.
Liposuction Techniques
There are various ways of performing liposuction, but all techniques use the tumescent liposuction technique. This is where fluid containing a local anesthetic, epinephrine, and a bicarbonate buffer is infused into the fat prior to lipo. This both increases safety by minimizing blood loss and makes it more comfortable because the area is typically numb for several hours after the procedure.
Your Liposuction will be performed by Dr. Jeffrey Lee at his office in Boston, MA
Ideal Candidates
Liposuction is particularly good for problem areas where fat just does not seem to go away no matter what you do. The patient should also have good skin quality and not have excess skin. Unfortunately, not everyone is a good candidate for lipo and Dr. Lee will discuss your options during your consultation.
Typically, patients who want liposuction:
- Have a problem area that just does not get better no matter how hard they try
- Are having another surgical procedure and want to enhance the overall look, such as a tummy tuck
- Are having a procedure where liposuction is part of the technique used, such as an arm lift, thigh lift, or gynecomastia surgery
Expectations
Dr. Lee usually tells patients to expect a 30-50% decrease in fat. While taking more fat away might seem like a good idea, this can increase the risk of contour irregularities. Dr. Lee believes that the 30-50% is the optimal amount of fat reduction that is realistic while maintaining the smoothest possible contour.
Recovery
Liposuction recovery typically includes 3-4 days of discomfort requiring prescription medications and then Tylenol after that. Patients usually take a few days off from work or school but are required to wear a compression garment for 3-4 weeks. It is also important to know that while a result is definitely noticeable in the first few weeks, the final result can take up to 6 months.
