Procedure

An arm lift, otherwise known as brachioplasty, is a procedure that improves the contour of someone’s arm between their shoulder and elbow. Patients often feel self-conscious when they wear short sleeves or tang tops because of the skin laxity in their arms.

Details

Arm lift surgery involves removing excess fat and skin from the upper arm area. This requires an incision from the underarm area down to the elbow. Dr. Lee places the scar on the inside of the arm so that it remains hidden when a patient’s arms are down. The scars can be visible when a patient raises his/her arms, so it is important to accept the scar as a necessary step to improving arm contour.

Ideal Candidate

A good candidate for an arm lift is someone who has excess skin on their arms. Unfortunately, almost everyone develops some skin laxity over time, but some patients have more severe cases than others.

An important structure to protect during arm lift surgery is the medial antebrachial cutaneous nerve. It supplies sensation to one side of the forearm and is at risk for injury during this procedure. Dr. Lee uses a technique that combines liposuction and skin removal to provide the best contour while minimizing the risk to this nerve.

Recovery

Patients typically take 1 week off from work/school although many return in less time. Pain is moderate but most patients stop taking their prescription pain medication after just a few days. There will be some swelling and bruising following the arm lift procedure, these issues will subside over the course of your recovery. Dr. Lee will ask you to wear a compressive garment for your arms for 4 weeks to help manage swelling.
