Implant Types
Saline Breast Implants
Saline breast implants are comprised of a silicone implant casing that is then filled with a sterile solution of saltwater (saline).
Saline implants can be inserted into the breasts and then filled with saline once they are in position. This means that the incision used for inserting the implant is relatively small which means they may be less noticeable once fully healed. Saline implants are also more affordable compared to other implant types.
Saline implants tend to have a firmer feel compared to normal breast tissue and other breast implant types.
If a saline implant rupture, it is generally-noticeable within 24-48 hours as the saline is absorbed by the body.
Traditional Silicone Breast Implants
Traditional silicone breast implants are made from a silicone casing that is filled with silicone gel. Silicone breast implants tend to have a more natural feel to them. Silicone implants also provide more natural-looking results when compared to saline breast implants.
Unlike saline breast implants, when silicone implants rupture, they may not be immediately noticeable. While a ruptured silicone implant is not a life-threatening issue, a ruptured implant can be the source of breast pain or may result in noticeable changes to the appearance of the breast over time.
Cohesive Silicone Gel Implants
Also known as “gummy bear” implants, cohesive silicone gel breast implants are known for providing incredibly natural-looking results. They also feel natural to the touch. The silicone gel is thicker and is more cohesive which means that if it were to break, the silicone retains its shape. Older implants would leak silicone which is still a big concern for patients. Fortunately, these types of implants solve that issue for patients and have been widely popular over the past several years.
